Progress made so far

Well, so far I've:
- Gotten the sprites for the character from Link to the Past
- Gotten the sprites for the first dungeon from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
- Finished the random dungeon generator
- Finished the rendering engine within dungeons
- Finished the engine behind actually walking through dungeons
- Finished the random encounter engine

Still have a ways to go, but once I get the battle system and character system finished, I should be able to release some playable form of the game

  1. I'm the guy who was suggesting no jobs and the shop inside the dungeons to have it so players still bring money into the dungeons.

I suggest if you're going to use Pokemon graphics, use Fire Red and Leaf Green. I find they're more solid and clear compared to Ruby/Sapphire.

  2. DEMO PLOX.

I want to see how well the dungeon generator works. Is up/down clearly labled or different looking? can you see what floor you're in on the hub?

  3. I'll be going with 4 distinct dungeon types, so fire red/leaf green is a possibility for other dungeon types. I may also decide to go with games outside of pokemon for some dungeons, but it might be weird to have different dungeons done in a different style.

Right now the dungeon generator is a series of generated rooms connected by paths. The rooms are empty right now, I'm not sure exactly what I'd put in them, open to suggestions.

As for the demo, I'd at least need to wait until I finish the battle system, not sure exactly when I'll be finished, I've never really designed one before. Even if the character skillsets and levelling aren't finished, I'll probably release one when the battle engine is done so people can test it and help me improve the battle mechanics

  4. Well in Fire Red and Leaf Green there are actually about 3 different cave tilesets if I remember correctly.

Seafoam Islands (which was an ice cave), Dark Cave (rocky), Cerulean Cave (different style than the ones mentioned). I'm not sure if you've played it but they do look different from each other.

I'm also pretty sure that Mt. Moon's tileset is the same as Dark Caves.

Question, why did you decide to use Pokemon tilesets and Legend of Zelda characters? You know there is a dungeon crawling Pokemon game, that's exactly what you're doing, except turn based. They also have a great variety of tilesets for this type of thing.

  5. Yeah, I was thinking of just doing different kinds of pokemon caves for the different dungeons. I sort of wanted to switch it up a bit between dungeons, but I couldn't think of anything else that would work better.

And I still would have needed LOZ characters, or something other than pokemon, since you're supposed to be a person, I couldn't have used mystery dungeon sprites, and the trainers from pokemon games aren't really good dungeon crawler sprites. Wanted to go more with a warrior style, and link was a good fit.

I've never actually played mystery dungeon before. Is it the same kind of grid 2D game that the normal pokemon games are? I'm having trouble finding a good spritesheet for it, all the spritesheets I can find seem to be purely pokemon sprites
